Dhaka Metro Rail
The Dhaka Metro Rail, a rapid transit system currently under construction in the city, is set to address
the pressing transportation challenges faced by Dhaka. Launched in 2016 and slated for completion in
2023, the 21.26 km system with 17 stations aims to provide a modern and reliable transport solution
for Dhaka’s growing population. With traffic congestion and air pollution plaguing the city due to
increased economic activity and population, the metro rail system is anticipated to alleviate these issues,
making Dhaka a more livable place. Financed by the Government of Bangladesh and supported by
partners like the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and the Asian Development Bank
(ADB), the project carries an estimated cost of $2.8 billion. Incorporating both elevated and
underground sections, the metro rail is designed to transport up to 60,000 passengers per hour. While
the fare is yet to be announced, it is expected to be affordable for the general public. The Dhaka Metro
Rail promises numerous benefits, offering a safe and reliable mode of transportation, particularly for
those without private vehicles. Additionally, the project is expected to generate employment
opportunities during and after construction, promoting economic growth and development in Dhaka.
In essence, the Dhaka Metro Rail is a crucial initiative that addresses the city’s transportation needs,
